Over 25 years ago, a few dedicated individuals set out to create a non-profit arts center that would explore, teach, and share the arts with all people throughout the Atlanta area and those who choose to visit the area.
The old Trolley Car Barn and Power Station in Stone Mountain Village was purchased by ART Station in 1987 and a 2.5 million dollar campaign was completed to renovate the space into a contemporary arts center housing a small theatre, 5 art galleries, a gift shop, rehearsal, dance and music studios, ceramics studio, box-office, production and administrative space.
“Today, the dream of the founders of ART Station is a reality with programs serving over 50,000 patrons and students each year.”
The ART in the ART Station name comes from a 1913 photograph of a trolley car in front of the building with the wording of “Atlanta Rapid Transit” written on the side of the car. Today, the dream of the founders of ART Station is a reality with programs serving over 50,000 patrons and students each year.ART Station programs include: Professional Equity Theatre Company, 14 Show Gallery Series, Fall, Winter and Spring Classes for children and adults; Summer Arts Camp for Youth, Teen Camp, Performance Company for Youth, Performance Company for Teens, Outreach Programs in the Boys and Girls Clubs and Children’s Emergency Shelter, 9 productions in the Children’s Theatre Series, annual storytelling festival with over 10,000 attendees, and fund-raising events throughout the year.
ART Station classrooms and studios provide a dynamic environment that nurtures talent and ignites creativity. ART Station offers a menu of choices for patrons and artists alike: Choices about materials, points of view, and subject matter; Choices about challenging our beliefs and enriching our lives through art.
