The Arabia Mountain Heritage Area is located within a 20-minute drive east of downtown Atlanta and provides a number of outdoor activities, environmental education and heritage preservation in a unique setting. The entire area encompasses land in DeKalb, Rockdale and Henry County.
The area is officially recognized as a “National Heritage Area.” The National Park Service defines heritage areas as the nation’s defining landscapes representing the national experience through a blend of natural, historic and cultural resources.
The heart of the heritage area is Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve. The preserve is a DeKalb County Park comprised of 2,000 acres of granite outcrop, wetlands, pine and oak forests, streams and a lake. Arabia Mountain and other nearby granite outcrops are part of an area in eastern Metro Atlanta that has been linked to human settlement and activity for thousands of years.
“Any time of year is a great time for families to visit the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area.”
This area includes not only the mountain, but lakes, rivers and farmland in the surrounding area. The history of human settlement in this region is intimately connected to its geological resources, starting over 7,000 years ago with the quarrying and trading of soapstone.
Arabia Mountain Trail
The Arabia Mountain Trail winds through 2,000 acres of protected parkland in south DeKalb County. The trail features several new arched granite bridges, a wooden boardwalk, and a short segment over a rock outcropping.
Hikers can walk the surrounding areas to view unusual plants or sit by a lake for quiet reflection. Guests can ride their bikes on the multi-use PATH trail through the forests and rock outcrops. Any time of year is a great time for families to visit the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area.
