Lithonia | The City of Natural Wonders
The City of Lithonia is located in east DeKalb and has a number of rock quarries throughout the city. Because of this, the given name of “Lithonia” means “city/town of stone.” The nearby granite dome, Arabia, is composed largely of a rock called Lithonia gneiss. Lithonia is home to the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, which offers an array of fitness trails and scenic views.
The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area encompasses of 40,000 acres and offers visitors natural wonders, compelling history and includes Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve and Panola Mountain State Park. The rare, native plant species, such as the signature red diamorpha in the winter and fall’s yellow daisies, make it seem as thoughthe rock is in constant metamorphosis. The National Heritage Area, one of only three in Georgia, protects and connects the unique history, rich culture and engaging landscapes within its boundaries.
The PATH Foundation has constructed approximately 30 miles of 12-foot-wide concrete road for pedestrian and bicycle use. It runs from downtown Lithonia to the Mall at Stonecrest through the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve to Panola Mountain State Park and the Monastery in Conyers.
Downtown Lithonia was recently nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and is home to a variety of businesses. One can enjoy smoothies and healthy snacks, test video game skills, or experience an eclectic array of clothing, accessories and art at great prices. There are also a number of barbers, hair stylist and a tailor to keep you looking sharp. The city is a pedestrian-friendly area with interesting architecture and lots of history. In the spring, the Lithonia Stewart Amphitheater will be returning to host concerts and other cultural events.
Stonecrest is a lively business area featuring shopping, dining and lodging, centered around the Mall at Stonecrest. The mall is a 1.3 million square-foot, two-level, indoor/outdoor super regional reatila, dining and entertainment complex on 200 acres, specializing in family fun, customer service, fashion, convenience and community accessibility. The Mall at Stonecrest opened in October 2001 as part of a master-planned community on the growing I-20 corridor.
The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area offers many outdoor activities including hiking, jogging, bird watching, fishing, geocaching and ecotours. Arabia Mountain and other nearby granite outcrops are part of an area in eastern Metro Atlanta that have been linked to human settlement and activity for thousands of years.
A historical destination located within Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, the Archives is a museum that features genealogical information on several Flat Rock families, oral histories from older residents, historical photographs and a quantity of written material. Visit the archives and learn about the rich diverse lives of the people who once lived, worked and worshiped in this small community.
Located just outside the city limits, the mall is an upscale shopping area conveniently located off I-20. The mall has five anchors: Dillard’s, Macy’s, JC Penney, Sears and Khol’s. Also attached to the mall is an AMC Movie Theatre located in the outdoor plaza near the pavilion food court. There are also many other shops and restaurants surrounding the mall area.
