Off The Eatin’ Path Visits Tucker’s Shorty’s Pizza

Atlanta’s DeKalb County has serious culinary cred. If you are looking for international cuisine to please any palate, you can find it in DeKalb County. Foodies have taken notice and the word is out that DeKalb County serves up some of the finest, original cuisine in Georgia.

My objective is to highlight some of the unique gems that are found throughout the entire county.

Shorty’s Pizza
Wood Fired Pizza Served With Unique Toppings

Shorty’s Pizza – (L-R) The B.B. King, The Chrissie Hynde and The Wu Tang Clan

You know you are “off the eatin’ path” when you visit Shorty’s Pizza, famous for their pizzas covered with unusual topping combinations and given names of singers such as “Carlos Santana,” “Weird Al Yankovich” and “John Lee Hooker.” Located just a couple miles off Highway 285 and just outside the Perimeter, Shorty’s is well worth the short drive for a unique culinary experience and plenty of local flavor in Tucker, Georgia.

Shorty’s Pizza Tucker, GA location

The ambiance and décor is pretty much what you would expect for a pizza restaurant. The building structure resembles a converted barn and the dress code is very casual. They have an outside deck and an inside dining area that is known to get pretty full on the weekends. However, the food is what makes this restaurant stand out and is a surprisingly, tasty delight.

Upon entering the restaurant, the large stage in the front of the dining area immediately caught my attention. On weekends, locals come to hear live music, mostly of the blues/rock genre. Make sure you call first to confirm live music as it is on a rotating basis.

I arrived early for lunch and it didn’t take long before it filled up with regular customers. Shorty’s offers a diverse selection of salads and sandwiches, but the main star here is their wood fired pizza with creative topping selections with names of various famous singers.

For lunch I sampled three of their signature pizzas in a small size serving (10”). My favorite was the “B.B. King.” It featured shaved BBQ pork tenderloin, cilantro, goat cheese and a generous ceaser salad on top. The crust is very thin, which makes it a little tricky to eat with all the lettuce on top, but it is definitely worth the trouble. I wasn’t sure about the quirky topping mix, but it was one of the best, original tasting pizzas I’ve had in a long time. Somehow all these unique flavors make sense when mixed together.

Next I tried the “Chrissie Hynde” (of the Pretenders) pizza, which included toppings such as roasted eggplant, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, roasted garlic and seasoned ricotta. One of the few non-meat choices on the menu, but the toppings made an interesting blending of tastes and styles.

I finished with the “Wu Tang Clan” pizza featuring buffalo chicken, bleu cheese, celery and ranch dressing. Think Buffalo wings on a pizza. This combination works very well together and has a spicy bite to it. It was a great tasting pizza from start to finish.

While the ambiance is not much different than most local pizza places, Shorty’s pizza is in a class by itself. Their small pizzas are definitely filling for one person and they also serve large pizzas to share with others. You can also “build your own” pizza based on your preferred selection of toppings.

Shorty’s Pizza is located at 3701 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA 30084 (770-414-6999). Their original location is located at 2884-B North Druid Hills Road, Decatur, GA 30329 (404-315-6262). For more information, visit Shortys-Pizza.com.

Road To The Georgia Dome: 2012

As November comes to a close, playoff berths for many Georgia high school football teams have now been punched and awaiting them is the opportunity to make school history and play for their class’s respective state title in the Georgia Dome. Seventeen of the 19 DeKalb County high schools have been to the state playoffs at least once, but this season only five have reached the postseason: Cedar Grove (AAA), Southwest DeKalb (AAAAA), Tucker (AAAAA), MLK (AAAAA), and Stephenson (AAAAA). All first round playoff games will be played November 16-17.

The Cedar Grove Saints (6-4) finished Class AAA Region 6 in fourth place and will take on North Hall; the number one seed from Region 7, for their first round match up on the road. Making their fourth consecutive appearance in the playoffs are the Panthers of Southwest DeKalb (7-3). The Panthers finished 6-AAAAA in fourth and will also play on the road against Kell. Southwest DeKalb looks to add another championship to their previous two state titles (1972, 1995).

All eyes this postseason will be on the Tucker Tigers, MLK Lions, and Stephenson Jaguars. In the latest coaches’ polls, MLK was ranked #2 in the state; Tucker came in at #7, while Stephenson placed #10. Tucker High finished the 2012 regular season with an 8-2 record and the third seed in Region 6-AAAAA. The Tigers will take on Creekview away, the second seed from Region 7-AAAAA. Tucker also has two state championships under their belt that they look to add another one to from 2008 and 2011.

MLK has the chance to join Tucker (2011) and Dunwoody High (1993) as the only three teams in DeKalb County history to ever go 15-0 in a season. The Lions go into the playoffs undefeated at 10-0 and in the first round, will play against Sequoyah, the fourth seed from 7-AAAAA. Stephenson ended their regular season at 7-2 and as the second seed in 6-AAAAA. Stephenson faces Pope, the third seed in 7-AAAAA. MLK is guaranteed a first round home game along with Stephenson.

All four playoffs rounds will be televised live on Georgia Public Broadcasting, WSB-TV, and Comcast Sports South. Games will also be streamed live online at www. ghsa.tv. The State Finals will be held at the Georgia Dome December 14 and 15.

Café Bombay
A New World of Fine Indian Dining

A few of my Indian friends recommended Café Bombay as one of the best Indian restaurants in town, and it did not disappoint. Café Bombay offers fantastic Indian food in a unique setting that is perfect for a relaxed dining experience with friends or an inviting mid-day lunch.

In addition to traditional dining, they have special private dining rooms with pillow cushions placed around low tables to create a more intimate setting. The restaurant is decorated with numerous Indian artifacts and statues and overall, the setting is quiet and peaceful.

I had the popular lunch buffet and was impressed with the variety and freshness of the dishes. It was amazing how quickly the restaurant filled up during lunch hour, with a large number of nearby college students looking for a reasonably priced, but delicious lunch buffet. Indian food can be traditionally very spicy, but for those who prefer their food a little less spicy, Café Bombay has you covered with a number of different options as well.

Their freshly cooked food is prepared with the use of a clay oven (Tandoor) and the Indian Wok (karhai), to create a harmony of subtle flavors, tastes, and colors.

The menu includes a number of lamb and goat delicacies including Sheek Kabab Wrap and Goat Curry, along with a variety of rice served with different meats and vegetables. In addition to seafood specialties, there are also a number of vegetarian delights like the Sarsoon Ka Saag (spinach and mustard leaves), Bombay Aloo (tiny potatoes) and Bhindi Masala.

To add to the overall ambience, Café Bombay offers live belly dancing every Friday and Saturday Night, except when there is a private event. Please call ahead for details.

Café Bombay is located at 2615 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30329. For more information, visit CafeBombayAtlanta.com or call 404.320.0125.

Blue Ribbon Grill
Your New Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant and Bar

Blue Ribbon Grill – Tucker, GA

“You Gotta Eat Somewhere and We Need the Money” – You gotta appreciate Blue Ribbon Grill’s sense of humor and blunt honesty with a statement like that. Though that may begin to describe the restaurant’s casual and no-nonsense approach to dining, make no mistake… Blue Ribbon Grill serves up some of the best tasting food in the area in large, heaping servings.

Blue Ribbon Grill has been a favorite neighborhood restaurant and bar for over 25 years. It has always had local Atlanta ownership initially including well-known Atlanta radio personality, Ludlow Porch and today is owned by longtime Blue Ribbon employee and former chef, Eddie Smyke, along with his business partner, Artie Brown.

The unassuming storefront, tucked in a strip mall near Northlake Mall in the Tucker area, has been serving up delicious, comfort food for residents and visitors alike for years. Inside, you’ll find comfortable seating, decorative memorabilia and wooden architecture. The friendly servers will make you feel at home the moment you step through the door.

I’ve been to the Blue Ribbon Grill for lunch many times, and usually go with the Baked Meatloaf, which is a particular favorite of mine. I’ve heard the Baby Back Ribs and Blue Ribbon Pasta with Chicken are also outstanding. They also serve up some mouth watering New York Strip and Ribeye Steak. Whatever ever you choose, you’ll be sure that you will not go home hungry.

Blue Ribbon Grill is also one of the best places in town to hang out with friends on Sundays to enjoy NFL football with 10 flat screen TVs. Make sure to check out their food and drink specials during the games while you cheer on your favorite team.

After leaving Blue Ribbon Grill with a full stomach and good spirits, you’ll be glad you chose Blue Ribbon Grill. Without realizing it, you may have just discovered your new favorite neighborhood restaurant.

Off The Eatin’ Path in DeKalb County Visits Decatur’s Seven Hens Restaurant

Seven Hens
It’s the “Schnitzel” that Makes the Sandwich

Pictured (L to R): Executive chef Ryan Kersting, Lead line cook Michael Johnson and Owner/CEO Michael Gurevich

Seven Hens Restaurant offers an interesting take on the chicken sandwich by offering schnitzel-style international chicken cutlets. Located in North Decatur Plaza, near Emory University, Seven Hens offers a delightful array of chicken dishes with flavors from around the world for lunch and dinner.

“Schnitzel”* is a traditional Austrian dish made by pounding and tenderizing boneless meat until it’s thin (creating an escalope), coating it in breadcrumbs and then frying it. Although its exact origins are uncertain, schnitzel has been adapted and adopted throughout the world’s many cultures.

Executive chef Ryan Kersting personally preparing a Schnitzel

Seven Hens opened in July 2012 as a self-described “upscale, fast-casual eatery.” The philosophy behind the rustic décor is about using “real” materials such as wood, granite, metal and concrete, as well as warm lighting to give a feel that differs from the typical fast food mold.

Guests order their sandwiches at the counter by picking a country to flavor their chicken – American, Mexican, German, Italian, French, Chinese or Indian. Next, they choose their style (Baguette, Wrap, Platter or Salad) and finally, decide on finishing touches such as sauces, spreads and toppings.

Local chef Stephen McGuffin, a seasoned veteran who has worked in Atlanta’s best dining establishments for many years, created the recipes. All the food is cooked in front of you, not warmed up, so you can really taste the difference. Sides include delicious Yukon Gold French Fries, along with Hummus and Traditional Eastern European Coleslaw and other favorites.

I tried both the Indian and the German style chicken. Both were absolutely delicious and flavorful. The Indian Sandwich, which was not spicy at all, was my favorite with its refreshing taste and paired well with the Sweet Potatoes on the side for an overall satisfying lunch meal.

Michael Gurevich, Owner/ CEO of Seven Hens, explained the schnitzel preparation is what sets their restaurant apart from others. He brought the idea back from Israel, where it is considered the most popular street food.

The Indian Schnitzel

He explained, “Opening Seven Hens is my way of upgrading a food staple from my culture with the best flavors that different countries around the world are known for and offering it to Atlantans in a style that everyone loves.”

Gurevich is genuinely passionate about offering his customers the finest preparations and adds, “Once they come through the front door, I am sure they will come back.” He hopes to offer franchise opportunities for Seven Hens in the future. Seven Hens had the honor of showing off their tasty schnitzel to Better Mornings Atlanta (WGCL CBS) three weeks after their opening (see video clip below).

Seven Hens is located at North Decatur Plaza – 2140 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033. For more information, visit 7Hens.com or call 404.633.3000.

* Fun Facts about Seven Hens and Schnitzel (Courtesy of 7hens.com)

  • As legend has it, 7th century Byzantine Kaiser Basileios the 1st liked his meat covered with sheets of gold to display his wealth. Following him, the commoners tried to do the same. However, the practice was too expensive so they created an alternative by using “yellow gold” (bread crumbs).
  • Schnitzel is enjoyed all over the world in different ways. Wikipedia lists 41 variations. We know over 200, but how about we start by offering you 7?
  • Seven Hens believes in honest food and use the finest ingredients including trans-fat free canola oil, making their all-natural schnitzel quite healthy.
  • The Austrians and Italians still quarrel over who came up with the modern-day version of schnitzel. Even though some historians think that the Romans were pounding, breading and frying their meat before the rest, it’s generally associated with Germany and Austria.

57th Fighter Group Restaurant
An Exciting Dining Adventure through
Aviation History

Nestled on the edge of DeKalb Peachtree Airport (PDK), the 57th Fighter Group Restaurant is a WWII aviation themed restaurant with an intimate 1940s European farmhouse setting that you will never forget. Beginning with the winding driveway dotted with old military planes and jeeps, you approach a mock Military Check Point Gate at the main entrance and quickly realize that you are in for a dining experience like you’ve never had before.

The sprawling restaurant opened in 1981 and was a favorite gathering point for locals and out-of-towners for many years. It has re-opened under new management and is now more popular than ever. The original 57th Fighter Group was involved in nine campaigns and flew 3,000 missions. There were books and even a movie made about their heroic efforts. Guests can view the historic aviation-themed memorabilia on display throughout the restaurant.

Walking past the sandbag lined walls of a historic bunker; the dining area feature cozy fireplaces and an open kitchen. The restaurant includes views of the outdoor runway, while serving up mouth-watering American dishes with regional influences. House specialties include French cut sage Pork Chop, Bourbon-Glazed Salmon, and 8-hour Braised Short Ribs as well as beef standards like Filet Mignon and New York Strip Steak. Don’t miss the Sunday Brunch, which is a delight with a delicious array of choices in an expansive buffet.

I love to take family and friends to relax on the outdoor patio, which includes a view of PDK, the second busiest airport in Georgia. The open expansiveness of the open sky over the runway provides a refreshing change of scenery. Sitting around one of the outdoor fire pits on a cool, spring or fall evening and watching the small planes take off is really enjoyable. Believe me, there is nothing like this anywhere in Atlanta.

The 57th Fighter Group Restaurant now features a “Wall of Heroes.” This special area is dedicated to the World War II Veterans, the greatest generation, who have signed their names and documented their stories of their contributions to our country.

Weekend Nights are a lot of fun in the lounge area, with a live DJ and an energetic, crowded dance floor for those interested in a little dancing after a great meal. Whether you visit for a complete meal, quick sandwich or just a drink, 57th Fighter Group Restaurant offers a variety of unique settings to enjoy and memories to cherish.

The 57th Fighter Group Restaurant is located at 3829 Clairmont Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30341. For more information, visit The57thRestaurant.com or call (770) 234-0057.

Villa Christina
Upscale Italian Style Dining with a View

Villa Christina is a jewel of an experience, tucked away near a cluster of condos just south of Perimeter Mall. It is the only three-story, stacked-stone Italian villa in Atlanta and is surrounded by professionally landscaped rose gardens, meandering streams and majestic waterfalls.

Upscale Italian Style Dining with a View

Villa Christina has remained a favorite Atlanta wedding location for years with ballrooms overlooking their beautiful gardens and their gorgeous outdoor wedding pavilion. During the week, it is a popular place for business meetings or lunch dates. Anytime of the week, it is a great escape into a lush getaway to enjoy fine dining in a cozy, European atmosphere.

Caffé Christina is located just inside the entrance of Villa Christina and reminiscent of a family-owned Italian bakery, with its large wood-burning oven, glass showcases filled with tasty items like tiramisu and handcrafted Italian marble floors.

Sprawling grounds, beautiful stone terrace and a garden event pavilion transform the typical after-work cocktail into an altogether different experience at Villa Christina!

The restaurant’s dining area is spacious and inviting, with lots of natural light coming from the spectacular garden view looking out to the outdoor terrace. It offers a more contemporary vista of elaborate glasswork, iron accents and an arresting ceiling mural that spans the center of the dining room.

I’ve enjoyed lunch at Villa Christina on several occasions and am always impressed with the freshness and quality of ingredients. The service is excellent and features a very knowledgeable wait staff. Having sampled a number of items off the lunch menu, everything I tasted was delicious and well prepared.

Lunch entrees include such delicacies as Pignoli Crusted Chilean Sea Bass, Chicken and Fusilli Pasta and Seared Yellowfin Tuna Carpaccio, to name a few. Dinner entrees include Filetto di Manzo (Grilled Filet Mignon), Costola di Vitello (Grilled Veal Porterhouse) and Agnello Osso Bucco (Braised Lamb Shank), among other favorites.

During the summer, Villa Christina presents their annual Summer Jazz Series, which showcases some of the finest talents in classic and contemporary jazz. Guests can bring blankets or lawn chairs and relax with some cool jazz while dining al fresco on a warm summer day. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy good food, music and drinks.

Villa Christina is located at 4000 Summit Boulevard, Atlanta, GA 30319. For more information, visit VillaChristina.com or call 404.303.0133.
