Explore the amazing world of geckos in this collection of more than 18 live gecko species, from shadowy nighttime hunters with unbelievable camouflage to neon-colored nectar eaters that scamper around in daylight. Learn about their night vision, magnify gecko toepads, listen to gecko voices, watch video clips of geckos in action, try to spot camouflaged geckos and build a custom gecko for various environments.

Award winning nature and wildlife photographer Bill Harbin decorates the entry level walls here at Fernbank with 33 astounding photos of bright flowers and fluttering insects. This returning exhibition, Winged Beauty: Butterflies and Other Insects, is an astounding collection of images. Vibrant, unbelievable colors illuminate the entry level walls in an array of insect photos.

Disease Detectives

In this immersive exhibition, museum visitors have the opportunity to role-play various medical professionals and solve up to three infectious disease mysteries. Participants meet interactive patients, analyze lab tests. and learn about the transmission and prevention of infectious diseases. Will they discover why young Adam can’t enjoy his birthday cake? Why Yolanda has become deathly ill while visiting her family? Or what is making Marcus so sick that he goes to the emergency room? Visitors can choose to solve the mysteries or interact with the exhibit components randomly, Either way, they will understand what causes infectious diseases, how infectious diseases spread, what the public can do to help stop the spread of infectious diseases and why there are so many emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

Blue Sky Concerts are held every Wednesday in September from noon until 1 pm at the Bandstand on the Square and sponsored by SunTrust. The Dammages play on September 1, The Jim Pearce Band on September 8, Angela Easterling plays on September 15, Wendy Jans on September 22 and the series culminates with the all women’s African drumming group The Conundrums. Journey into the vast expanses of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert and follow a lion pride ruling territory near one of the few water holes in the land. A young nomadic lion seeks to win the king’s throne resulting in an epic standoff between two Kalahari giants. At the water hole, springbok and gazelles quench their thirst, elephants splash around creating a giant mud bath and the lionesses playfully roll in the dirt with their cubs. Filmed entirely in the wild, this extraordinary documentary captures the most amazing wildlife behavior ever seen on the giant screen. Audiences will stand in the line of a charging elephant and stare into the eyes of a dominant lion king.

Islamic Calligraphy and the Qu’ran

The Carlos Museum will host complementary exhibitions showcasing exceptional masterworks of Islamic calligraphy and related objects. The exhibitions and accompanying community outreach and educational programs will celebrate the rich religious and artistic tradition of calligraphy, or “beautiful writing,” the most esteemed of the Islamic visual arts. The varied works of calligraphy in the exhibitions—from practice alphabets to elaborately finished manuscripts—serve as traces of individuals, belief systems, and cultures. The costly and exotic materials lavished on writing instruments also document the international trade of the period, from 1600 to 1900, and create a rich material legacy that fuses aesthetics and piety.

Salvador Dali: New Additions to the OUMA Permanent Collection

The Oglethorpe Museum of Art recently received a gift of 14 original Salvador Dali lithographs (including 12 four-color prints). These lithographs by the surrealist Spanish master (1904-1989) are now part of the museum’s permanent collection and have never before been exhibited to the public.

Utrillo: The Magic of Montmartre

Enjoy a collection of paintings by Maurice Utrillo (1888-1955); the prominent artist of the romantic and picturesque Sacre Coeur section of Paris. Utrillo is one of the few famous painters of Montmartre who were born there. The artwork in this exhibition is compliments of a private collection and has never before been shown together.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival is an annual, free book festival that takes place over Labor Day weekend in Decatur at several venues located in and around the downtown Decatur Square. It is the largest independent book festival in the nation. The festival brings more than 300 authors to Decatur for the holiday weekend to give readings, talks, and panel discussions. Authors include Pulitzer Prize winning and best-selling authors of fiction in many genres and nonfiction on diverse topics. The authors come to Decatur from across the country and international points as well.

Stone Mountain Park’s Lasershow Spectacular™ is an Atlanta tradition and is the longest running lasershow in the world. This year, the first Concert will be held on Sunday night, September 5 beginning at 6 pm, in conjunction with the Decatur Book Festival. Learn to appreciate authentic Argentine tango. You will learn about the rhythm and movement of Argentine Tango and how to focus on connecting with the music and your partner. Learn how two bodies can move as one. Dancers of all skill levels are welcome and no partner is necessary. The evening begins at 8:00 pm with an introductory lesson from the expert instructors of Tango Rio. After the introductory lesson, you will be ready to try out your new moves with an open tango dance party, beginning at 9:15 pm.

Chili Cook-Off

Chili Cook-Off draws more than 300 teams competing for “Best Of”, “People’s Choice” and “Showmanship” awards in competition categories such as Chili, Brunswick Stew and Cornbread. More than $10,000 in prize money is awarded. Sample the great food and participate in a variety of contests. The event’s proceeds support Camp Twin Lakes, a non-profit that offers year-round recreational, therapeutic and educational programs for children facing serious illnesses and other physical, emotional and life challenges.
