Olympian Angelo Taylor Makes Big Leap For His Final Finish Line

Gala Atlanta Send-Off Scheduled for Friday, July 20

(New York, NY)……Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Angelo Taylor is packed and ready to leap over the water to London, to compete in his 4th Olympic Games.

The Atlanta, GA native is a track and field standout (400 meter hurdles) who brought home Olympic Gold Medals in the 2000 and 2008 Summer Olympics. The only other Olympic athlete to win Gold Medals 8 years apart is the legendary Edwin Moses, so Angelo Taylor is definitely a young legend.

The 33 year old will be feted at a gala send-off in Atlanta, GA on Friday, July 20th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Morris Brown College (Hickman Student Center Cunningham Auditorium) 715 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Highlights of his outstanding career will be shown, as well- wishers bid him bon voyage to continue his historic run in London.

Taylor achieved his first major track and field breakthrough at age 21, when he earned an individual Gold medal out of Lane One in the 400 meter hurdles and a team Gold Medal as a member of the 4×4 relay at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He matched his 2000 breakthrough by winning double Gold medals in the 400mh and 4×4 relay at the 2008 Olympics.

The Atlanta, GA native is a track and field standout (400 meter hurdles) who brought home Olympic Gold Medals in the 2000 and 2008 Summer Olympics.

This is likely to be Taylor’s final trip to the Olympics, so this seasoned athlete is prepared to turn up the heat and go for the Gold once again.

Off the Eatin’ Path in DeKalb County: Revolution Doughnuts – ‘Back to Scratch’

Atlanta’s DeKalb County has serious culinary cred. If you are looking for international cuisine to please any palate, you can find it in DeKalb County. Foodies have taken notice and the word is out that DeKalb County serves up some of the finest, original cuisine in Georgia. My objective is to highlight some of the unique gems that are found throughout the entire county. If you would like to suggest a restaurant to be considered for inclusion, please email BarryS (at) dcvb.org.

Revolution Doughnuts: Back to Scratch

DeKalb CVB Sales Team Visiting Revolution Doughnuts

Looking for the perfect desert after a fantastic meal, our DeKalb CVB Sales Team headed over to locally-owned Revolution Doughnuts in the City of Decatur. Owner, Maria Moore Riggs, started selling her tasty, handmade pastries at the Decatur Farmers Market in the City of Decatur. In June 2012, she decided to open an actual brick and motor storefront after obtaining funding through a successful Kickstarter Campaign (see video below) to cover start-up costs. Many of the backers of the campaign were residents of the local community.

Revolution specializes in their organic, locally sourced doughnut creations. Their intention is to offer doughnuts made from scratch with real food ingredients and without all the preservatives and artificial flavorings. Located south of Downtown Decatur and near Agnes Scott University, Revolution Doughnuts sits across from the MARTA railroad tracks and offers a calm respite from the busy morning rush hour with a handful of small tables and outdoor seating as well.

The City of Decatur's Revolution Doughnuts

Their menu seems to be constantly changing and evolving, with exciting options popping up on a daily basis, and when they are gone… they are gone. The Peach Doughnut Sandwich, Nutella Cream-filled Doughnuts and Salted Caramel Doughnuts topped with bits o’ charcuterie bacon definitely caught my attention.

Of course, Revolution Doughnuts also offers a number of hot and cold drinks to enjoy with their pastries. It is a wonderful place to enjoy a Cappuccino while sampling some of their original doughnut creations, which are always fresh and delicious. Visit their Facebook page to see what they are serving up fresh each day.

Revolution Doughnuts is located at 908 W. College Ave, Decatur, Georgia 30030. Phone:(678) 927-9920. RevolutionDoughtnuts.com.

Sports DeKalb’s Conversation with 1988 Olympic Bronze Medalist Larry Myricks‏

Interview by James I. Pressley

Larry Myricks today is known in Metro Atlanta as the Executive Director of the Atlanta Corporate Challenge or as a Board Member on Sports DeKalb, but few in today’s younger generation remember Larry Myricks, the four-time Olympian and Bronze Medalist at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. I had the chance to catch up with Myricks, reflecting on his historic career and thoughts on the upcoming games in London.

Larry Myricks with DCVB's Sports Marketing Manager Dan Bell

Sports DeKalb: Larry, what comes across your mind when your name is mentioned as one of the greatest jumpers in U.S. track and field history?

Myricks: Well, I guess more than anything else, it’s kind of a validation of all the things that I accomplished while competing over the years.

My purpose in competing was to make the most of this God-given talent that I had and just see how far it could take me and where it would take me. – Larry Myricks on competing

Sports DeKalb: Your long jump duels against Carl Lewis and Mike Powell were considered legendary. How did it feel to constantly compete “in their shadow” over the years?

Myricks: First of all, “in the shadow” depends on who you are talking to, and secondly, I competed because I was good at it and I enjoyed what I did. I didn’t step on the track with my sole purpose trying to beat Carl and trying to beat Mike. My purpose in competing was to make the most of this God-given talent that I had and just see how far it could take me and where it would take me.

Sports DeKalb: In 1968, Bob Beamon set the world record in the long jump of 29 feet, 2 ½ inches. Throughout your career, did you ever find yourself chasing the record prior to Mike Powell eventually surpassing it in 1991?

Myricks: We’re always chasing the record! Everybody wants to break the record. Mike eventually got it, but that was certainly one of my goals when I really got serious about my track and field career, sure. I got close, but I didn’t get close enough. You know there are always those big ones that get away from you, but that was definitely one of my goals.

Sports DeKalb: You participated in the Summer Games on four different occasions. What is your fondest memory of being an Olympian?

Myricks: I think for me, fondest memories are not so much the memories of competition, but more so all the people I was able to meet and make friends with. I have friends all over the world because I was able to be an Olympian. So fondest memories for me are not going to be a track meet where I jumped 28 feet. It’s going to be a track meet where I sat down with a guy by the name of Jaime Jefferson, whom you’ve probably never heard of, and we played backgammon in Paris. For me, it’s those kinds of things; the medals and the awards, you get them and they stay in the closet, locked in the dark basically. My memories are of people, not so much performances.

Sports DeKalb: What would you consider a low point of your career?

Myricks: Probably in 1976, I made my first Olympic team and I was warming up for the finals and broke an ankle, unable to compete. That for me was my lowest point. I was right there and was jumping really well that year; there was no way I wouldn’t have got a medal. I had to sit there and watch the competition before they even knew I was injured to the point I needed medical attention.

Sports DeKalb: The Summer Games will be coming up within the month. Is there anyone or any event in particular that you are looking forward to seeing?

Myricks: Of course, I’m going to watch the long jump because that was my event. I watch it all, I watch all the events. I like to watch the track and field; I like to watch the swimming and gymnastics. Those are probably my three favorite of the summer events.

Sports DeKalb: Is there a current track athlete who reminds you of yourself in your prime?

Myricks: No. And I say that because the athletes of today seem to approach what they do differently than the way “we” did. And “we” meaning that there were a lot of guys back in my day that took what we did a lot more seriously. We were students of our events; students of our sport. We knew about the athletes that came before us and respected their opinions. We would listen to what they had to say, their suggestions. We didn’t have to use them, but we would listen respectfully. We competed. We showed up at every meet and went head to head no matter what. Nowadays, they’re more concerned about world rankings, contacts, and all this other kind of stuff. Plus, the sport is in a different place too.

Sports DeKalb: So what is Larry Myricks doing today?

Myricks: He has a sports promotions company, and I basically do different types of sporting events. We do clinics for track and field athletes, clinics for coaches, and we just wrapped up a five week, 22-tournament competition called the “Atlanta Corporate Challenge” that was for companies in the Metro Atlanta area. So that is where my path is taking me right now.

Sports Dekalb: I understand that you are also working with Sports DeKalb, how has that been for you?

Myricks: It has actually been very good. I have been able to make some very good connections and contacts and it has been great for networking. It has helped me get out in the community. I have a pretty good handle on all the facilities and venues because we do a lot of different kinds of events. So it’s nice to know where to go. I think probably more for the networking and all that kind of stuff, it’s really been a good deal for us.

Off the Eatin’ Path in DeKalb County: Think, Then Eat! Is the Mantra at Farm Burger

Atlanta’s DeKalb County has serious culinary cred. If you are looking for international cuisine to please any palate, you can find it in DeKalb County. Foodies have taken notice and the word is out that DeKalb County serves up some of the finest, original cuisine in Georgia. Southern Living Magazine recently named the City of Decatur as one of the top ten “Tastiest Towns in the South.” ‘Nuff said.

Our DeKalb CVB Sales Team has started meeting for lunch at different DeKalb County restaurants every week. As Marketing and Communications Manager, I decided to begin blogging about these unique restaurants to introduce visitors to dining options when visiting our county. Our objective is to highlight some of the unique gems that are found throughout the entire county. We will be compiling our listings for a special dining section on our website in the future. If you would like to suggest a restaurant to be considered for inclusion, please email barrys@dcvb.org.

Farm Burger wants you to think about your burger – What it is and where it’s from…

Outdoor Dining at Farm Burger

“Our cows are raised on the sweet grasses of the southeast, and never fed antibiotics, hormones or grain. Our menu is seasonal and sourced from local farms,” boasts the Farm Burger Menu…

Not Your Average Burger...

So fresh burgers from local farms were on our mind when we recently visited Farm Burger in the City of Decatur, located minutes from the Downtown Square. Inside is a very casual, hip atmosphere with plenty of self-seating with a laid-back flair.

High ceilings and group-size hardwood tables give a rustic feel to the architecture. There are also several tables outside on a front patio for outdoor dining. Local hipsters and families mix with business people as they wait in line for a lunch break.

Guests order from a giant blackboard and food is delivered to your table. Menu highlights include a simple, “build it yourself” choice of burgers, chicken or veggie burgers. However, their beef burgers and fries are the star attraction here. There are a number of intriguing items you can top off your sandwich with such as “aged smoked gouda,” “oxtail marmalade” and “decimal place goat cheese” in addition to the free extras.

Sides include items like sweet potato fries, local fried okra and beer-battered onion rings. A number of independent beers such as “Heinnieweisse Farmhouse Ale” or “Wells Banana Bread Beer” offer alternatives to the usual domestic standards.

DeKalb CVB Sales Team

The burgers were fresh and delicious. The fries were hot and tasty. If you are looking for an alternative to the usual hamburger gig with ingredients that you can feel good about, then Farm Burger is an excellent choice. Another reason the City of Decatur is known through the foodie world as a “must visit” for unique dining.

Farm Burger is located at 410B West Ponce de Leon, Decatur, Georgia 30030. For more information, visit FarmBurger.net or call 404-378-5077. They also have a location in the Buckhead area.
